Follow @SkeptiCamp5280 on Twitter or Facebook for details and updates of Colorado's sixth event, coming to Boulder on May 7th! SkeptiCamps are open, participatory events that focus on distributing knowledge within communities of skeptics. We encourage each attendee offer a short talk on a topic related to science or skepticism, but giving a talk is not required to participate. At the very least we ask that everyone be actively engaged, asking questions during the talks. For an introduction to these newfangled open events, see Reed's recent article Top 7 Reasons Why SkeptiCamp Sucks
edit NEW! - Message from lead organizer Rich Orman via the MeetupSkepticamp Denver/Boulder 2011 is just two days away. We now have 91 people signed up to attend, which means that we have room for 19 more. This is the the largest and most interesting skeptical event in the metro area, so please think about coming if you have not already signed up. Please go to the Skepticamp webpage for more information and to sign up. We do have a couple of things that you can do to help with the event, if you are so inclined. A number of us are bringing snacks and stuff for breakfast, but 90 plus people is a lot. So, if you would like to bring something as a breakfast snack or something like that, or a mid-morning or mid-afternoon type snack, that would be great. If you could bring some hot coffee and cups, that would be great, as well. Also, if you have a portable card table with a portable chair or two, and could bring it along, that would be great, as we are going to need somewhere to put all of the snacks and so forth (we cannot have drinks/food in the room where we are actually meeting, so this will be in the hallway outside). If you want to bring a table or coffee, please let me know via email, so that we don't end up with 10 tables and 20 gallons of coffee. The event is scheduled to start at 9:15, with 9:00 to 9:15 for set up. I would recommend arriving around 9:00, so you can help set up, if needed. Hope to see you all there!
edit Colorado leads the way!The innovation of open events in skepticism started here in Colorado with the first experimental SkeptiCamp in 2007. Now coming upon our sixth event, we build on past events in Denver, Castle Rock and Boulder. Most recently students in Fort Collins organized their first event with a record 27 talks! These events have reached far from Colorado, with Sydney Australia hosting their first event on April 30th, which will mark the 25th event overall (History of events). edit Where and when is the event?Where:
Leeds School Of Business--Koebel Bldg, Room 210 edit Streaming VideoWe hope to have steaming video. Check back here for a link when we get closer to the event. edit Directions and parkingThe event is in the "smartroom" of the Koebel Building at the Leeds School Of Business at the CU-Boulder campus. The address is 955 Regent Drive, Boulder, CO. There is ample pay parking right in front of the building. There is a cafe/coffee shop next to the smartroom. Please follow this link for a map. http://leeds.colorado.edu/location edit Register to attend! This is the official signup page for this event. There is no cost to attend. All you need to do to register to attend is to edit this wiki page and insert your name into the list of registered participants. We will allow for 110 people to register. If you are higher than number 110, please consider yourself on a waiting list, but please come anyway. We have had waiting lists in the past and there have always been no-shows on the date of the event, and no person on the waiting list has ever been turned away. If you don't feel comfortable editing a wiki page in order to register(it is really easy, though), please send an email to richorman@q.com and you will be added in. edit Registered participantsTo add your name (individuals only please!) click the 'edit' link to the right and add yourself to the END of the list. No need to create an account!
edit What needs to be done? These are collaborative, community-organized events. We need many people involved to make this event happen, such as to offer talks, to help recruit good speakers, to man the registration table and especially to help promote the event. edit Participate by giving a talkAs SkeptiCamp is about sharing knowledge, we strongly encourage each participant to offer a short talk on a topic related to science or skepticism (though giving a talk is not required to participate.) Sorry, but at this late stage, the schedule is full where we cannot accept additional talks. However, do consider giving a talk at a future Colorado event. edit The Event Schedule
edit Scheduling policies and guidelinesTalks will be either 12 minutes with 3 minutes between talks or 25 minutes with five minutes between. The organizational committee can agree to longer times, if necessary, but only if there is more time available than there are people that want to speak. As is tradition, Rocky Mountain Paranormal will have approximately one hour after lunch, subject to change. If there are more people that want to give presentations than there is time allowed, the organizational committee may ask speakers to volunteer to take shorter times, and if there are not any volunteers the orgninzational committee may shorten all participants' speaking time to make room for more speakers, but this is within the discretion of the organizational committee. edit Room layout and A/V setupWe have the smart room, which should have all the AV bells and whistles you would ever want. Please plan on having a visual component to your presentation, either in Powerpoint or Keynote, on a thumb drive or on your own computer. We should have a Mac and a Microsoft machine available. We strongly suggest that you also save your presentation as a .pdf file in case there is a compatibility issue with our software. edit ContactYou can reach the organizing committee by sending an email to richorman@q.com. Please include the word "Skepticamp" in the title line. If we have more people that want to do presentations than the time allows, the organizing committee reserves the right to modify (shorten) the amount of time allowed for each presentation. |
